Panasonic working on 3D HD Cameras

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 6:09 pm (Apr/19/09) KewlGear, Technology No Comments »

Every once in a while we’ll hear about some new technology that has allowed for an advancement towards the “dream of true 3d.” — From the geeky kid running around with a set of red-blue specs, to captain E.O., to Monsters vs. Aliens, the technology has come a long way, but it has a way to go before it becomes the de facto way to display data and multimedia content.

That’s why it’s nice to see that NAB 2009 (The gathering of the National Association of Broadcasters) has seen a dozen or so different manufacturers making announcements about their forays into 3D. One in particular, Panasonic, actually brought a mock-up of a 3D shooting system that looks to be a combination of their stellar P2 Pro cams and something straight out of Halo.

From their Press Release

LAS VEGAS, NV (April 19, 2009) — Panasonic Corporation, a world leader in High Definition technology, today announced it will start developing a professional 3D Full HD production system. The system, which is expected to be the first of its kind in the industry, consists of a twin-lens P2 professional camera recorder and a 3D-compatible High Definition Plasma display. Panasonic will exhibit concept models of the 3D system at its booth (Central Hall #3712) at NAB 2009 to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 20, 2009.

With Hollywood studios moving towards creation of more 3D entertainment content, Panasonic successfully debuted the world’s first 3D Full HD Plasma Home Theater System based on Plasma display and Blu-ray Disc technologies at the CEATEC trade show in Japan in September 2008. More recently, the company also established the Advanced Authoring Center within Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory in February 2009 to support Hollywood studios in developing 3D Full HD Blu-ray Disc titles.

iPhone 3.0! It’s here…well…not really…yet.

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 9:30 am (Mar/17/09) AppleBeat, KewlGear, Technology No Comments »

So… a brief breakdown of what’s coming to your iPhone this summer : Cut & paste is on board, MMS(woohoo…’bout time, son!), ’search’ while in mail app, copy & paste more than 1 photo in an email, YouTube app improvements, ability to use the “landscape” mode(panoramic/sideways view) in more foundation apps (like notepad, calendar, text, etc.), “shake to shuffle” your music in iTunes, voice memo-record, edit, copy, email, and a few others. iPod Touch owners, this update will set you back $9.95, while 2G owners…well, you won’t be capable of MMS. :( Sorries!

ioSafe Solo shows how it’s done…

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 2:20 pm (Jan/07/09) CES, KewlGear No Comments »

The ioSafe Solo at first glance looks sleek and a bit larger than normal external hard drives. It can safely store up to 1.5TB of your data in over 1550 degrees(for 30 minutes) in a fire, and has a 3 year warranty…which ioSafe claims it will spend up to $1000 of their own money to recover your data if your HD is damaged.

Whoa! Swype technology the new standard in touchscreen keyboards???

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 2:11 pm (Sep/13/08) KewlGear, Technology No Comments »

Swype has come out with technology that will allow you to touch and swipe words on any touchscreen keyboard. Seriously…touch one one letter and swipe the rest to form words…and fast! Anywhere from 45-50 WPM(depending how fast your finger swipes). The idea is you touch the first letter of the word you want to type and then swipe across the screen to include all the other letters in the word. So easy, so simple. Why didn’t anyone else think of this years ago?? No more stylus, no more smart mode. It’s just like finger painting sans the color. The software even has auto-spacing between words for faster typing. It includes over a 65,ooo word Learning Dictionary…if it doesn’t have the word you want to type, it’ll learn it for next time. Based out of Seattle, WA, Swype was one of TechCrunch50’s many presenters. It’s currently looking for Beta testers. Can’t wait for this to go mainstream!

With over 3,000 apps listed so far(including jailbroken apps), it’s a simpler, faster, easier, and more organized way of finding that app you’ve been dreaming about. It even links you directly to iTunes to buy the app once you’ve checked out the description and screenshot. Check it out and tell me what you think! Secure your Nike+ SportBand sensor…

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 12:11 am (Aug/28/08) AppleBeat, KewlGear No Comments »
Since getting my Nike+ Sportband several months ago, I have toiled and tried different ways of securing the little sensor to my shoes. I’ve tried a few cases I bought online, I’ve made my own little cloth case via my own shoddy sewing, I’ve even tried gluing and velcroing it to my shoes and shoe laces…every single time ending in disappointment :(

My new solution: in walks the SwitchEasy Runaway for iPod Sport Kit. My friends, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Now, this is primarily meant for the Nike+ iPod kits, but hey, the sensor is exactly the same for the Nike+ SportBand. It’s a cute little case that completely envelopes the sensor and is weather proof. It has a reinforced 3-point lock to completely secure the clip from the base for harsh running conditions. Also, they’ve had the foresight to include a click lock mechanism to hold your receiver when you are not using it. To use this case: simply place your sensor in the see-thru case and snap it closed, take the base of the case and place it under your shoe laces, twist the sensor 45 degrees until you hear a click, and voila! No messing around with velcro straps, ugly cases, or pouches. I’ll be trying this on a couple of runs soon and will let you know how it goes!

New Bags will ease your Laptop through TSA Security… Maybe

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 3:04 pm (Aug/15/08) KewlGear No Comments »

I’ve become so accustomed to airline security that I almost don’t notice the lengths that I have to go through just to get into a flying aluminum tube. My laptop(s) comes out, my camcorder needs to be unpacked, my shoes leave my feet and I hope that I remember to wear the pants that don’t require a belt to stay around my waist. — Now comes word that the TSA has FINALLY approved three bag styles that will allow screeners to inspect your laptop without you having to take it out of the bag….

You might remember just a few weeks ago we had a little contest here on TheTechStop to see who could send me the most interesting interview blooper you have ever experienced. Well, we had several submissions, but one truly stood out from the crowd. Unfortunately, he’s asked that his identity and story be confidential but let’s just say it involved hair gel, vaseline, a little regurgitation, and shaking the hand of a CEO. Hands down, the best story!

So, the winner of our first little giveaway here on TheTechStop: Chris Knowles from Evansdale, Iowa. You’re 17″ MacBook Pro Speck cover in green is on its way to you!!! CONGRATS!!

What’s your favorite iPhone application??

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 10:46 am (Aug/06/08) AppleBeat, KewlGear No Comments »

I just couldn’t resist. After over a year of waiting for the next iteration iPhone, I finally gave in to the dark side. By this, I mean, I woke up early this morning, drove down to the Apple store at Townsquare in Las Vegas and got in line…..yes, there is still a line at 7am! Oy Vay! I picked up a ticket for a white 16G iPhone and took off like a bat out of hell(only to return later this afternoon to avoid waiting in line any longer). So, this afternoon I will be a proud owner of a shiny piece of technological goodness. The only question is…what apps should I download???

Sure, sure….of course, I’ll be getting an app for twitter, say twitterific or twittelator, Facebook for certain, the Remote app as well, maybe even Bloomberg. What else would you recommend? Extra points if you tell me a bit about the app itself and why you love it! As usual, you can comment below, email me at melanie@thetechstop.net or tweet me at www.twitter.com/kewlgirl.

gogo…for those on the go!

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 8:10 am (Aug/06/08) KewlGear, Technology No Comments »

Aircell’s gogo network will be available to all Delta Airlines flights starting in 2009. Delta is the first major US airline to offer broadband Wi-Fi access to its entire fleet. Gogo, will enable Delta customers traveling with Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and PDA’s, to access the internet, corporate VPN’s, corporate and personal email accounts, as well as SMS texting and instant messaging services. Gogo will be available to customers for a flat fee of $9.95 on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours.

Personally, I’ve been ecstatic about airlines finally allowing the public to be more productive in-flight, especially for those who travel cross country for work. Hell, when I do a 3 hour flight I get bored of listening to my iPod, watching a movie on my laptop, or reading so this is heaven to me! Although, you can kiss your nap time or quiet time goodbye….think of all the little clicks, clacks, and tapping you’ll be hearing more of on your flight.

Speck giveaway! Contest ending soon…

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 11:36 am (Jul/30/08) AppleBeat, CareerByte, KewlGear No Comments »

Alrighty folks, a few weeks ago I started our first CareerByte column with an article sharing interview bloopers made by other people. In it, I offered a Speck product giveaway: a shiny new cover for the Apple product of your choice if you are picked as the person with the most embarrassing moment before, during, or after an interview. Come on! It’s all in good fun and you can remain anonymous if you would prefer. All you need to do is comment below, email me your story at melanie@thetechstop.net, or tweet me at www.twitter.com/kewlgirl. Don’t forget to tell me what Speck product you’re craving for and what color! Last day to turn in your story: this Friday, as in August 1st! Winner will be announced early next week. Good luck!

Doh! More problems with the 3G iPhone…

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 9:29 am (Jul/30/08) AppleBeat, KewlGear No Comments »

As if slow apps, frozen screens, and shorter battery life weren’t enough…I’ve been hearing from friends and different forums that the new 3G iPhone is also showing little hairline cracks in the plastic backing of the phones. Oy Vay! Most of these reports have been from people who own the white, 16G version, but supposedly this is because it is much easier to spot on the white one. Hmmm…always thought it was easier to spot “webbing” on black cars than on white cars, but I guess materials are different. Anywhoo, if any of you Apple fanboys are experiencing this problem, too…give me a shout at melanie@thetechstop.net or www.twitter.com/kewlgirl .

Cuil…not really all that kewl.

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 9:24 am (Jul/28/08) First Looks, KewlGear 1 Comment »

Today was the big premier of ‘cuil‘, a new search engine touted as the next big thing to challenge Google. I’ve been running searches on it all morning, and my friends, sorry to say…it ain’t so kewl. Not only are results lackluster and erroneous at times, but some traditional Boolean searches just don’t quite equate…at all…as in “no matches found”. Yikes! Looks like they need to refine their website before truly opening it up to the mass public.

Why so much hype? It’s three founders are ex-Google employees…ex-heavy hitters to be exact. The husband and wife team of Tom Costello(former Stanford Professor and Xift creator) and Anna Patterson(who sold her company Recall to Google and was the architect of TeraGoogle), and Russell Power( who worked with Anna at Google). They are also backed by $33 million in venture capital.

Rumors are flying again…

: Posted by Melanie Ballecer @ 10:57 am (Jul/18/08) AppleBeat, KewlGear No Comments »

With reports that BestBuy will be expecting a limited amount of MacBooks and MacBook Pros in the next two weeks plus China reporting that Apple has increased its orders of notebook circuit boards, one cannot help but conclude that a refresh of MacBooks are a coming! This comes as no surprise after Intel announced its new Centrino 2 platform.

The rumors are also getting stronger that this updated line will include more MacBook Air like aesthetics: aluminum casing, tapered sides, larger track pads, and hopefully multi-gesture capable.
