ezGear Video eyewear for iPod/iPhone

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 1:58 pm (Sep/24/09) First Looks No Comments »

I haven’t always been the biggest fan of “personal video screens” — you know… those products that place two small LCD screens a few inches from your eyes and claim that is create an image that is equivalent to a 500′ screen. The very first kit that I reviewed, almost a decade ago, was cool and geeky, but the resolution was wanting, the price was astronomical, the glasses bulky and the video was nausea-inducing. — Bottom line… they just weren’t ready for prime time.

What about now?

ezGear just released their ezVision TH121 for the Apple iPod or iPhone. These slick glasses connecect to the iPod dock and can shuttle both audio and video from your video-capable iDevice…. and it does all of this in a package that can be easily packed away for travel.

With a 5-hour battery life, QVGA or VGA resolution, and a $400 price-point for their most expensive model, ezGear is counting on the desire of iPhone/iPod users to watch their content on something other than the iScreen.

Let us know in the comments if you want to see ezWear on a future episode of ‘gadget,’

Is it time to dump DHS “Threat Colors”?

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 6:29 am (Sep/17/09) Padre's Blog No Comments »

I travel. Not a lot, but enough to know my way around an airport. I can zip through a security line with all my fluids in one bag, my ticket in my mouth, a laptop out of its case, my pockets empty of anything that might upset the metal detector, and my shoes on the conveyor belt. I understand most of the little tips and tricks that you can use to make a long travel experience just a bit more comfortable… and one of those little tips is knowing what airport noise can safely be filtered out of my mind so that I can get some rest between flights.

You know… things like, “Los Angeles Internationl Airport would like to remind you to control your bags at all times”, or “Welcome to Chicago O’Hare Internation Airport. Passengers are reminded that this is a no-smoking area.”… Oh… and of course…

“The current status as defined by the department of public safety is orange.”

Detroit’s Airport: Among the best in the world?!

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 5:35 am (Sep/16/09) Padre's Blog No Comments »

For most in the US who have grown up with images of Detroit as a decaying city riddled with political corruption, corporate complacency and sheer urban rot, it might come as a surprise that Detroit’s airport recently ranked 4th in passenger satisfaction in a March 2009 survey by the Airports Council International. In fact, I must admit that when “DET” came up on my most recent travel itinerary I considered spending an extra $100 just to avoid what I assumed was a new low in airline travel satisfaction.

To my surprise… this airport rocks!

iLive releases all-in-one Sound Bar Speakers for Home Theaters

: Posted by RyanBallecer @ 7:41 am (Sep/14/09) First Looks, The Green Geek No Comments »

Shuffling through my inbox I happened across a press release for some new Bar Speakers from iLive. I’m not much of a uberAudio geek, but there was something about the design and specs of these units that caught my attention.

The iT319B Live Bar Speaker is a all-in-one home audio/home theater system for those who are looking for multifunctionality in a small package. It includes a side-mounted, slot-loading optical drive that can read DVDs, CDs and JPEG disks. The iT319B includes an HDMI out to pump your digital audio and video directly into your TV with a minimal amount of fuss and signal noise, AND an upconverting chip that raises regular DVDs to high-def theater pieces.

JVC Releases 70,000:1 Contrast Entertainment Projectors

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 4:20 am (Sep/13/09) First Looks 1 Comment »

From the Press Release JVC updates its award-winning line of D-ILA home theater projectors with the introduction of six new models, each offering the high native contrast that has made JVC projectors top-selling favorites among the most demanding home theater enthusiasts. The new line includes four THX® Certified projectors and all six achieve unprecedented contrast ratios without the need for artificial contrast enhancing techniques, such as a dynamic iris. In fact, JVC’s new top-end model boasts a native contrast ratio of 70,000:1 – the highest among all currently available home theater projectors.

The new projectors are the DLA-RS35, DLA-RS25 and DLA-RS15 to be marketed by JVC’s professional products group, and the DLA-HD990, DLA-HD950 and DLA-HD550, available through JVC’s consumer electronics group. All six projectors feature the same D-ILA technology and features found in previous models, but add improvements in both performance and usability.

New for 2010 is JVC’s double-speed 120Hz Clear Motion Drive technology to reduce motion blurring, and a new screen adjustment mode to optimize the projector for different screen types – features available on all six new models. Four of the six new projectors – DLA-RS35, DLA-RS25, DLA-HD990 and DLA-HD950 – offer JVC’s new original picture modes, which provides advanced processing that adjusts for the different way that projectors process color compared to the color mixture method used in film. As a result, the projector delivers the subtle nuances typically associated only with a movie theater presentation. What’s more, these same four new models are certified by ISF and so include an ISF C3 mode so they can be professionally calibrated.

Arlington School couldn’t be bothered for Obama, will bus kids for Bush

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 3:06 am (Sep/13/09) Padre's Blog, Politics and Law No Comments »

I want to believe that this is really part of a well-constructed educational plan that is not about politics and entirely about the educational merits of a school activity, but seriously…

How can you say that just listening to President Obama encourage students to stay in school will disrupt classes while scheduling a bus trip to cowboys stadium to listen to former president George W. Bush talk about football?

From MSBC: “The Arlington Independent School District, which passed on airing President Barack Obama’s live classroom address, has announced that some students will be bussed off campus to hear a message from former President George W. Bush on Sept. 21.

District officials said it’s part of a Cowboys Stadium field trip that the North Texas Super Bowl Host Committee invited 28 fifth-grade classes to attend several months ago.”

Netgear WNDR3700 : High-end networking for the rest of us

: Posted by Robert Ballecer @ 5:20 am (Sep/10/09) First Looks, Technology, uberGeek Candy No Comments »

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten excited over the announcement of a new router. That’s why I had to check myself when I received word of the newNetgear WNDR3700. Billed as the “Ultimate Network Machine” the WNDR3700 is the latest in Netgear’s popular line of RangeMax wireless devices.

The WNDR3700 supports simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N, upping the total wireless bandwidth available to your users. It sports 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a ReadyShare USB port for sharing any USB storage device across the network. It also supports bandwidth metering — an incredibly useful feature for those who are faced with an ISP who wants to cap their service.

  • Powerful 680 MHz Processor
  • Fast Shared Access to USB Storage
  • Stream Content to DLNA/UPnP Media Players
  • Broadband Usage Meter
  • Video Quality of Service

Of course, that’s just the tip of the RangeMax iceberg. The WNDR3700 incorporates 8 “meta material” antennas in an array that allows it to more precisely direct RF energy. Netgear backs up the antennas with some of the most powerful and clean signal amplifiers on the market, as well as an algorithm that reduces jitter and packet loss in streaming video streams.

Put simply, it’s a router… and I’m excited. We’ll be getting a WNDR3700 into the lab within a month. I’ll be sure to let you know if it continues to impress.
