Any traveler knows how much of a pain it can be to properly pack your luggage. A typical packing experience consists of finding the right balance of clothes, electronics and fragile accessories before cramming it into a case and balancing everything on a scale that was most likely NOT designed to give an accurate weight for something as bulky as a wide-body rolling bag. With airlines now charging for extra or overweight luggage, it’s become even more frustrating to “cram it all in” without risking a hefty fee.

For many of us that means underpacking to avoid going overweight, or adding a second or third bag. However, chances are that even the careful traveler will eventually be caught in the embarrassing situation of having to crack open luggage on an airport floor.

The Ergo from Balanzza is a pocket-sized, hand-held Digital Travel Scale that can make the eight game a thing of the past. At only 6 1/4 by 2 1/2 inches and 8 ounces, the Ergo is capable of weighing items up to 100 pounds with digital accuracy to a tenth of a pound or kilogram.

The Ergo is designed simple: it is shaped like a hand grip so that the handle itself is the scale, reducing the size and complexity of the unit.

The front of the Ergo is dominated by a large, easy-to-read LCD screen. Below it are buttons for power, switching between pounds and kilograms, and for resetting the unit.

The Ergo is powered by two AAA batteries that should keep the unit powered for hundreds of uses. Below the battery compartment is the weighing mechanism which includes a quick-release snap-strap for attaching bags to the Ergo for weighing.

For accuracy, Balanzza built the Ergo to wait for a consistent weight measurement before beeping and locking the LCD display at the final count.

Using the Ergo is easy. Turn on the unit and allow it to zero itself, then attach the snap-strap to the handle of the luggage you want to weigh. Lift the bag with the Ergo and wait for the beep. The display now gives you an accurate weight of your bag… That’s it. You can now pack your bags to their check-in limit without having to worry about an overage fee or the embarrassment of having to shift items at the ticket counter.

The Balanzza Ergo is available now online and select retail stores. You can find it for less than $20.
